RESEARCH PROPOSAL (PORTFOLIO)
TOPIC: VIOLENCE AT SCHOOL LEVEL
1. Violence at school level
2. INTRODUCTION
The intention of this research proposal is to investigate the wave of violent
attacks which has rocked South African schools. It has been reported that the
both educators and learners are facing increasing levels of physical and
physiological violence. It is important to address school violence for the
following reasons: a) it violates the rights of the child and the educator; b) it
negatively impacts on the educator’s ability to teach and on the child’s ability to
learn; c) it has a negative impact on surrounding communities; d) it negatively
impacts a country’s development goals; and e) it has extensive health and
economic costs for the country (Burton & Leoschut, 2013). I am doing this
research because in recent times the schooling environment is experiencing
, challenges such as bullying, gangsterism and serious violence crimes such as
murder. These problems make learners and educators feel less safe, and it
makes it harder for learners to learn and for teachers to do their jobs effectively.
In 2018 news 24 reported that a teenager was arrested for the murder of a
fellow pupil at an Eastern Cape school, following a stabbing during a fight over
a missing cellphone. Police spokesperson Captain Khaya Tonjeni said a 16-
year-old pupil had been arrested after the 18-year-old victim died at a local
hospital. The incident took place at a high school in Peddie.
3. Problem statement and research question (half a page)
The main problem is the wave of violent attacks which has rocked South African
schools where by teachers and learners are being attacked at all South African
provinces. Violence or abuse in any form has serious health consequences for
the victim. It can lead to negative health outcomes such as chronic pain,
increased risk of stroke, heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, cancer, or
gynecological problems. Teachers have an important role to play in child
protection. This lies not only in the detection and reporting of possible cases of
child abuse but also in multi-disciplinary teamwork, and in contributing to the
ongoing support and monitoring of the abused child. This problem if researched
better solutions to stop violence at schools can be found.
Research question:
How can curriculum-based activities help to improve increase of violence at
school level?
4. Literature review
(a) The literature review is a written overview of major writings and other
sources on a selected topic. Sources covered in the review may include
scholarly journal articles, books, government reports, Web sites, etc. Primary
and secondary sources will be studied in order to gather information about
violent attacks on school level. Information from journals, newspaper articles,
