- Remember -

S: The speaker contemplates the time she will be dead. Initially she wants her
beloved to remember her but then decides that he would rather forget her and be
happy.
I: Love is selfless
F: Petrarchan sonnet / Italian sonnet. The octave expresses the speakers desire to
be remembered after death. While the select conveys her sacrificial hope that her
beloved would rather forget her for a while and be happy than to remember her and
be sad.
T: Reflective/contemplative tone

Line 1:
“remember me” – remember is repeated 5 times which shows
longing for her partner to not forget her.
“when I am gone away” = death
“silent land” = euphemism
“far” emphasizes the distance and heightens the separation and
sense of loss
”silent” connotation of rest and peace. A lack of movement usually
associated with sound.

“hold me by the hand” – union created, togetherness

 Orpheus is allowed to leave Eurydice from the underworld but
breaks his agreement with Hades by turning to see if she is
following him, he tries to embrace her but she fades away and
he loses her forever.

Line 5:
“day by day” – Ongoing anticipation of the couples plans
 Planned indicates aching desire not to be forgotten
“only” – emphasize intense desire to be remembered

Line 8:
“It will be late” – Tone is emphatic (expressed forcibly/clearly)
“counsel then or pray” – when she dies, prayer or counsel will end.
