Nutritional Principles in Nursing Module 7: Diet Therapy for an MI
Module 7: Diet Therapy for an MI The focus for this live classroom is a discussion about diet therapy for a 58 year old woman who experienced her first MI and is being discharged home. She currently works full time and is divorced. She lives in an apartment and has no family in the surrounding community. To prepare for the live classroom session and your written submission, use your chapter readings, review of videos, course materials, research, and written assignments. Be prepared to discuss the following: 1. What should be the focus for her nutritional history and assessment? My focus during this assessment is to assess the clients general diet and nutritional history. I will gather information on her cultural and ethnic background. I will ask her for a general list of what foods she eats regularly; what does she eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, how does she prepare her meals, does she eat three meals a day or does it vary, etc. 2. What dietary recommendations should be made? I would recommend my client to pay attention to and read food labels. I would recommend that she stay away from trans fats and processed foods. I would recommend that she reduce her sodium, sugar and fat intake in general. I would recommend substituting certain fats and oils with plant-based oils for cooking. I would recommend that she avoid or at least limit her intake of meat, specifically read meat.
