In this particular assignment I will delineate on the various aspects regarding Building a Portfolio of ABET Practice. Firstly, I will identify and discuss three major barriers that learners may come across when preparing evidence for assessment. Secondly, I will discuss the portfolio and its functions. Thirdly, I will describe the National Qualifications Framework in my own words. Fourthly, I will explain the learning pathways as outlined by the NQF through a diagrammed illustration. Lastly, I will list and describe the guidelines on selecting and using evidence as suggested by Jones and Shelton (2006). 1. Question 1 1.1. “In collecting assessment evidence one can foresee some obstacles which may impede the learner’s success or progress.” Identify and discuss three major barriers that learners may come across when preparing evidence for assessment. Explain how each of these barriers will be addressed According to UNISA (2010:10-11) the three major barriers are: Language Language can be a barrier to the collection of assessment evidence. Many people learn through a second or a third language and due to this may experience barriers when their communication skills in the language for the assessment are limited. The written or spoken words may be above the level of the learners, this can make it difficult for them to understand the information required of them. Some people like to impress their learners by using words or concepts unknown to non-native speakers of the language of instruction. This can prevent the learners from demonstrating their competencies in the knowledge and skills being assessed. Educators and or assessors should use simple words of a language in which all learners and the assessor are able to communicate adequately. By doing this the language barrier can be minimised.
