Learning objectives:
- Give a basic description of philosophy of technology and the types of questions that are asked from this
perspective;
- Describe in general terms the development of philosophy of technology based on the three periods identified by
Van den Berg & Keymolen
Ambivalent technologies
- Role of technology not only limited to healthcare – we live in a technological culture
- Technologies are everywhere around us
- Technology and society/culture mutually shape each other (often in unpredictable
ways)
- High expectations vs. intense debate about new technologies
- Many ‘hoorah’ stories about new technologies: optimism and high expectations as a
recurring trend
- Alternative voices are also often heard: technology presented in highly negative
terms, critical perspectives on technology (oppressive, dehumanizing)
The role of philosophy of technology
- Asking particular ‘types’ of questions about technology
- More abstract: what is the nature of technology?
- Broader focus: what is the meaning of technology in our contemporary society?
- More critical: to what extend do we consider technological developments to be
beneficial? Who benefits and who doesn’t?
- Asks a particular attitude from you as student
- Critical analysis: what are underlying assumptions?
- ‘Out of the box’-thinking: what alternatives can you come up with?
