THEMES

GOOD VS EVIL

● The way Macbeth VS Duncan rules as king
● Poor innocence of Macduff and his family VS the bloodthirsty Macbeth
● Lady Macbeth VS Macbeth:
- in the beginning lady Macbeth looked evil and Macbeth good
- VS the end where Macbeth now looks evil and lady Macbeth good (how their
roles swapped)
- Lady Macbeth calling upon spirits show us how she is not truly evil
● Macbeth’s reaction VS Banquaos reaction towards the prophecies
- Macbeth (evil) wanted to do everything in his power to make these
prophecies true, which showed us how he would even go as far as to kill
- Banquo (good) is morally strong, believes that if it is fate then it will happen

APPEARANCE VS REALITY

● The second set of prophecies: boy with the branch → branches going to Duisande
- Didn’t believe it would actually happen
● Lady Macbeth appears to be nice to Duncan but her real intention was to kill him
● Duncan children leaving after his death:
- Appears as if they are guilty; in reality, they are not

● Lady Macbeth telling Macbeth to act as an innocent flower but the serpent
underneath it

Order VS Disorder

● The dinner: arriving → orderly
Leaving → disorderly ( Macbeths hallucinations)
● There is disruption of nature when the king is killed
- Weather, owls, horses...
- The natural being of lady Macbeth and Macbeth start to change

● Lady Macbeth mental state in the beginning vs the end
- Beginning: in control
- End: lost control, Macbeth is keeping things from her and she starts to loose
her mental state (e.g sleepwalking)
