Discuss the physiological/chemical action (pharmacokinetics-pharmacodynamics), indication, side effects, adverse reactions, contraindications, nursing consideration, nursing interventions, geriatric/ pediatric/ pregnancy consideration and patient teaching for: ● Opioid narcotics ○ Action: inhibit pain ○ Indication: mild to severe pain ○ Side effects: respiratory depression, hypotension, miosis, urinary retention, and constipation ○ Contraindications:patients with head injuries; respiratory disorders; low blood pressure ○ Other considerations:Do not give opioid antagonist to patients who are addicted because it will cause withdrawal symptoms ● Methyl amphetamines (Ritalin) ○ Action: increase child’s attention span and cognitive performance but decreasing impulsiveness and hyperactivity; AMPHETAMINES ACT BY STIMULATING THE RELEASE OF NOREPINEPHRINE AND DOPAMINE ○ Indication: ADHD ○ Side effects/adverse effects: increased heart rate, euphoria, palpitations, dysrhythmias, increased BP, dry mouth, anorexia, constipation, diarrhea,insomnia ○ Contraindications:N/A ○ Other considerations: SCHEDULE II DRUG BECAUSE OF THE HIGH ABUSE POTENTIAL ● Barbiturates ○ Action: reduces seizures by enhancing GABA AND helps with sleep ○ Indication:presence of seizures or insomnia ○ Side effects/ adverse effects:headache, nausea, suicidal ideation, fatigue ○ Contraindications: Pregnancy ○ Other considerations- POSSIBLY TERATOGENIC; discontinue gradually to avoid recurrence of seizures; short acting barbiturates have a high abuse potential and are considered schedule II drugs ● Benzodiazepine ○ Action: induces sleep by inhibiting GABA neurotransmitters.........
