, Question 1

1 Historical evidence and historical sources
When constructing a picture of the past, historical evidence is utilised. The sources
provide the historians with the evidence they need to do so. An historical source is
something that has survived from the past or that has the ability to inform us about
the past. When a source is utilized to answer a question about the past, it is
considered evidence or proof. Take, for example, the image or sign below, which
depicts beaches in South Africa. By examining the facts or proof, you will be able to
respond to questions such as "Why were only white people permitted during the
apartheid era?" The image depicts how whites, blacks, and people of colour were
separated from one another.
When it comes to learning about the past, historians can usually locate some
sources to aid them in their research. However, there are often more sources for the
recent past, such as World War II, than there are for the distant past, such as the
Khoisan people. On top of that, certain locations have a greater number of sources
than others. When it comes to Ancient Egypt, for example, there are more sources
than when it comes to South Africa.
There are times when sources are preserved for historians because someone
desired to do so. Consider the practice of recording every word said in a legislative
chamber. Chance may also safeguard information sources. As an example,
manuscripts from the Timbuktu Museum were taken. It was fortunate that the
manuscripts were saved thanks to a local man's assistance It would have been
impossible to learn about Timbuktu without the good fortune of finding the
manuscripts. Some sources are lost due to the actions of those who want to
demolish or otherwise destroy them.

2 Historical sources
A historical writer's work should be founded on meticulous examination of original
materials, according to German historian Leopard von Ranke, and it should be
properly appraised, he said. Personal sentiments or views, for example, should not
be taken into consideration.
Research is necessary for historical writing. The gathering of material about a topic
or subject is necessary in order to reconstruct the past and write the history of a
given time, event, person, or organization. Those who are interested in the subject
matter should discuss relevant sources. The term "historical source" refers to any
item that sheds light on the subject. An item, a book, or an oral tradition might serve
as the source of information. It is possible to find historical sources in a variety of
places including police records, parish registers, letters, contracts, newspapers,
verbal testimony that has been recorded or taped, antique equipment, firearms,
paintings, and poetry. In order to learn about the past, historians must first examine
the sources that individuals who lived in the past have left behind them.
