In this assignment I am going to analyse and explain how the business structure of my two
contrasting businesses allow each to achieve their aims and objectives for each business. My
two contrasting businesses chosen are Tesco PLC and Starbucks Corporation.

TESCO
Tesco is a British multinational grocery and general merchandise seller company. Tesco
follows a hierarchical organizational structure. In this structure, positions and obligation are
divided into many parts to ensure work will be done efficiently and smoothly. The ones at
the top of the business pyramid have the maximum responsibilities and authority.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Tesco has a hierarchical structure. It is mainly a functional structure as it focuses on the
different departments in the business. The reason they use a hierarchical structure is
because the organisation is large and has multiple layers within it. Tesco employees
hundreds of thousands of people around the world, and it would be impossible for one
person to keep an eye on all of them. That is why Tesco uses a hierarchy structure to
manage different countries, different departments, different stores, and different people.
This’s successful to Tesco to executives to focus on making major business decisions instead
of using their energy on the various daily decisions that are important when running a
business. The structure helps to achieve its aims and objective because the Tesco’s structure
depends on its objectives and the strategy, this will then tell everyone to contribute to
achieving the target that they will have to achieve in a given period of time. This will help
enables effective team or the staff who understand their own role and contribute their very
best to Tesco to achieve its target. This will also determine how roles, power and
responsibilities are assigned, and how information flows through the organisation. The
strategy would help because the strategic planning ensures that the employees and other
stakeholders are working together to achieve that goals. It also establishes agreement
around intended results and to assess and adjust the Tesco’s direction. The strategy will
produce important decisions which will then guide Tesco.

ADVANTAGES
Everything in Tesco’s hierarchical organisational structure is going to be organized and
stabilized and there is less likely to get authority and obligation disordered. The
advppantages of this structure to Tesco is that employees know their roles entirely and
know the requirements and what they are responsible for. Also, it allows for management
to run more smoothly when everybody has an individual place with a task-completion
motive and the objective will be clear so the task can be done in time. Another advantage is
that using a hierarchy structure also means that customers get the best care in the business,
so this helps Tesco to fulfil their purpose. Tesco has a large number of managers and each
manager will usually be responsible for a small group of employees. Having many managers
