Should Cannabis be legalized in the UK for Recreation Purposes?
Introduction
Cannabis is among the misused drugs across the world. In the UK, cannabis usage has
amplified over the three eras over numerous reasons such as mental health benefits and
recreational purposes. While medical cannabis was legalized in UK in 2018, the recreational
purposes and usage of cannabis still remain unlawful in the UK legislation. The UK legislation
Dangerous Drug Act 1928 prohibits the use or possession of cannabis, has resulted into heated
debates among different stakeholders, who want the drug to be prohibited and those who want
the drug to be legalized. Over the recent years, there has been rising pressure from the public to
the UK government to decriminalize the consumption of marijuana for recreational reasons,
however, some of the supporters are not much aware of the negative aspects that are attributed to
the legalization of the drug. To address this issue, the researcher will explore various benefits and
dangers attributed to the use of cannabis for recreational purposes before making a concrete
stand.
First, Legalization of cannabis will increase the revenue collection of about $1 bn per
year by the UK government (BBC News. 2020). Legalizing cannabis will allow various
recreational joints to sell cannabis to potential customers thus allowing the government will be
able to collect large amount of money from the taxation of consumed cannabis either at home of
in the various joints that will pay some amount for the certification to sell the drugs. Studies
indicate that states in the US that have legalized the use of cannabis have managed to raise
hundreds of millions of dollars (Tax Foundation. 2020). The large revenue collection has
significant impact on the economy, since it can be used to fund other special programs.
