Figurative language is used to convey meaning to the reader through comparisons,
substitutes, and patterns. Figurative language is frequently used in literary texts.
However, because words do not have a single, objective meaning, the majority of
language is figurative in some way. To captivate children, the author made the sea
forceful and introduced it as the story's primary character using a lot of figurative
language, strong verbs, and adjectives.
The shell by Colin Thiele was mostly set at the beach near a cliff, where then the
story explored into the greed of human and the consequences behind. But the story
mostly focuses on a family having a picnic, the mother collects shells, the father and
the son goes fishing. Throughout the story the father and the son starting to take
more fish than they are supposed to and this movement shows the family is being
greedy by taking more fish from the ocean. The ocean came alive and took his
revenge by claiming both of their lives. The short story ‘The Shell’ display the greed
of human and the consequences behind.
‘The shell’ by Colin Thiele uses imagery to show the ocean is dangerous and alive.
The use of words in this story talking about the ocean and how it came alive makes
