Introduction
In this assignment I will be preparing and testing the purity of a sample of ethyl
ethanoate and then draw conclusions based on my results. I will also report
the industrial manufacturing and testing of ethyl ethanoate. Furthermore, I will
put the laboratory and industrial manufacture and testing side by side with
each other comparing the similarities and differences. As well as this, I will
draw detailed conclusions on the preparation and testing of the purity of an
organic liquid which we demonstrated in class.
What is ethyl ethanoate?
An ester is an organic compound made by replacing the hydrogen of an acid by
an alkyl or other organic group it is the product of the condensation reaction
between an alcohol and carboxylic acid. Ethyl ethanoate is one of the most
common esters. Some uses of ethyl ethanoate are for nail polish remover,
glues, lacquer thinners and perfumes. Ethanoic acid and ethanol react together
to create ethyl ethanoate; sulphuric acid is added to speed up the slow
process.
The equation:
Ethanoic acid + ethanol = ethyl ethanoate + water
CHCOOH + C2H5OH = CH3COOC2H5 + H2O
