Influence of early attachment on later relationships
Internal Working Model
Suggested by John Bowlby- a child’s first relationship with their primary attachment figure
will act as a template for future relationships- the role of schema.
Loving relationship- the child will not be too uninvolved or too emotionally close (type A
behaviour) or being too controlling or argumentative (type C behaviour).
Bad experiences of their first attachment may be carried onto future relationships. They may
struggle to form relationships or not behave appropriately when they have them (type A or C
behaviour).
Relationships in later childhood
Attachment type is associated with the quality of peer relationships in childhood.
