Nelson, one of the children in your class, does not look healthy. His stomach looks bloated,
and his skin looks dry and scaly. Apart from often falling sick and skipping school, Nelson
also seems to be tired most of the time, and his teeth are decayed. On following up on
Nelson’s family background, you discover that he comes from a poor family and that his
parents are unemployed.

In your own words, explain what the cause of Nelson’s condition might be and what factors
could be contributing to the condition.

 Nelson is suffering from malnutrition. Reasons for this can be that Nelson is not
taking in the necessary nutrients he needs so he is not eating enough. His stomach
looks bloated which can mean he has gastronomical infections because he is not
eating enough. Both Nelson’s parents are unemployed which can mean that there
is not enough food for everybody in the house or any food at all. Nelson is always
tired which could mean that he does not have any energy, because he is not eating
correctly or getting enough food.



Identify five types of food, giving examples of each, that Nelson will need for growing and
for staying healthy.

 Carbohydrates for example cereal

 Fruit and vegetables for example oranges or broccoli etc.

 Dairy for example milk

 Proteins for example chicken

 Fats and oils for example coconut
