Report form
Pizza Hut UK, which was bought by private equity group Rutland Partners from US
giant Yum! Brands in 2012, has turned an operating profit as it pushes ahead with a
£60m refurbishment programme.
The business reported an operating profit of £1.7m in the year to December 1 2013,
compared to a loss of £4.4m previously. However, sales fell 14pc to £230m as the
chain reined in aggressive discounting, which became commonplace in the casual
dining sector during the economic downturn.
After exceptional items, Pizza Hut UK posted a pre-tax loss of £968,000 from a
£1.3m profit previously, although 2012’s results were flattered by £5.1m of
exceptional items, including £2m from the sale of the UK Pizza Hut delivery business
back to Yum!
Pizza Hut closed 21 underperforming restaurants last year, taking its total to 307.
Jens Hofma, managing director, said further 15-20 outlets in poor locations will close
this year but the company is also now looking for new sites.
