PYC3716 – Community Psychology: Working for Change 2021 – Semester 1 & Semester 2 – Assignment 2 Assignment 02 is linked to Activities 5 and 6 in the Study Guide. 1. Make a shortlist of each of the organisations at which you would consider volunteering. This list will consist of a subset of the organisations in your booklet – approximately three to ten organisations. Put the organisation at which you would most like to volunteer at the top of the list. You are also welcome to add organisations (perhaps organisations in a neighbouring community) to your shortlist, in other words, those that you did not include in the booklet. In most cases, students find that they end up volunteering at one of the organisations mentioned in their booklet, but we do not want to limit you – you can include any community organisation (excluding commercial enterprises) in your shortlist of organisations at which you would like to volunteer. 2. Approach one or more organisations and arrange with one of them to work as a volunteer. Write a report about your experiences in approaching organisations. We suggest that you structure your report as follows: o For each of the organisations that you contacted, briefly describe what the organisation does and what happened in your engagement with them. o Then, for each organisation, provide a brief reflection on the working relationship (goals, tasks and bonds) that you managed to establish. The three elements of a working relationship are present to some extent in even the briefest of encounters. Don’t feel that you have to paint a pretty picture – if, for example, you felt that the encounter was too brief to establish much of an emotional connection, then say so and perhaps reflect on how the bond could be deepened, should the relationship continue. If you approached only a single organisation, that is also fine. If you sent e-mails to some organisations, but never received a reply, put that in your report as well. We are interested in your first steps in becoming a volunteer – the good, the bad, and the ugly (and the beautiful). We do not prescribe a specific length of the assignment, but we expect that most students will require a couple of pages. 3. Submit the assignment as Assignment 02.

PYC3716 – Community Psychology: Working for Change
2021 – Semester 1 & Semester 2 – Assignment 2

Assignment 02 is linked to Activities 5 and 6 in the Study Guide.
1. Make a shortlist of each of the organisations at which you would consider volunteering.
This list will consist of a subset of the organisations in your booklet – approximately
three to ten organisations. Put the organisation at which you would most like to
volunteer at the top of the list. You are also welcome to add organisations (perhaps
organisations in a neighbouring community) to your shortlist, in other words, those
that you did not include in the booklet. In most cases, students find that they end up
volunteering at one of the organisations mentioned in their booklet, but we do not
want to limit you – you can include any community organisation (excluding commercial
enterprises) in your shortlist of organisations at which you would like to volunteer.
2. Approach one or more organisations and arrange with one of them to work as a
volunteer. Write a report about your experiences in approaching organisations. We
suggest that you structure your report as follows:
o For each of the organisations that you contacted, briefly describe what the
organisation does and what happened in your engagement with them.
o Then, for each organisation, provide a brief reflection on the working relationship
(goals, tasks and bonds) that you managed to establish. The three elements of a
working relationship are present to some extent in even the briefest of encounters.
Don’t feel that you have to paint a pretty picture – if, for example, you felt that the
encounter was too brief to establish much of an emotional connection, then say so
and perhaps reflect on how the bond could be deepened, should the relationship
continue. If you approached only a single organisation, that is also fine. If you sent
e-mails to some organisations, but never received a reply, put that in your report as
well. We are interested in your first steps in becoming a volunteer – the good, the
bad, and the ugly (and the beautiful).
We do not prescribe a specific length of the assignment, but we expect that most students
will require a couple of pages.
3. Submit the assignment as Assignment 02.
