NRNP 6645 Task 2 Professional Portfolio 1. Professional Summary A. Being a learner as a healthcare professional has been good for my work. I have looked more and learned about evidence-based practice and used that in my day-to-day work life. All the artifacts and work that I have done are being applied in my bedside skills and critical thinking. The work on Professional Leadership and Communication facilitated my examination of my nursing roles, including the leadership type that I was using (Bodine, 2020). Leadership and Communication taught me how to help with others and collaborate better to utilize my coworkers’ strengths and differences. The biggest one also being Evidenced-Based Practice and Applied Nursing Research. It taught me how to appropriate utilize statistics and read the latest research. Through that I have been able to help update polices and change my units practice on some nursing bedside activities. B. As a provider of care, there are specific artifacts and work in my portfolio that represent my professional strengths. This being my eagerness to work and stay up to date on the latest research. Utilizing appropriate problem-solving skills, communication, positivity of opinion in nursing, and readiness to learn. I used to be afraid of voicing my opinion for change on the unit, especially to policy change. But now that I feel confident in reading evidence-based practice and presenting it, I have been able to effectively change multiple policies. I know am respected when it comes to my voice on the unit, which is a great change thanks to the BSN program. C. The challenges that I encountered during the progression of my program were all COVID related. Doing the Community Health and Population-Focused Nursing Field Experience. Finding sites to assess and people to interview was the hardest part. Lots of places were not taking volunteers or did not have staff in person to interview. The other challenge that I ran into was time management. Between having a full-time job and having two little kids during COVID, it’s hard to find time to work on schoolwork. I. How I was about to overcome these challenges, were a couple different ways. The first challenge to overcome was finding people to volunteer with or speak to. Luckily, I work at a major hospital and have a lot of friends that were able to connect to me people in the community to speak to. The second was finding time and a place to study or take my exam. There have been times that I would have to leave the house and study at a friend’s house in order to properly study for an exam. I was about to study in the library at work, which was very helpful. My mentor was helpful on thinking of different ways to get exams and papers done. Using the writing resource lab to help proofread papers, when I either did not have enough time or focus to keep proof reading. D. My coursework helped me meet the nine nursing program outcomes. Those being safety and quality, accountability, communication, compassionate care, leadership and education, social advocate, genomics and genetics, interpersonal collaboration and information technology. 1. Safety and Quality: I have learned, through my course work, how to utilize clinical reasoning and be able to provide safe, ethical and quality nursing care. This being based on evidence-based practice. During my leadership experience course, I learned about how negativity really impacts patient’s safety and quality of care (Meyer, 2019). How a decrease in nursing staff can lead to a lack of care on a patients end. 2. Accountability: Being accountable as a nurse means being able to provide ethical, safe, professional and unbiased towards my patients and their families. Means to advocate for my patients and hold myself accountable for my actions. Following the policies of the unit and understanding why those policies are in place. 3. Communication: Being an effective communicator is crucial for my job. Being able to openly communicate with my coworkers and my patients and their families. Being able to communicate changes in my patient or advocating for their needs. Communication was also important with my mentor and my teachers. Being able to say what I needed in order to finish a class or a study guide. 4. Compassionate Care: My coursework in Community Health and Population helped me with evidence-based practice and research to examine what the community directly needed. I never gave much thought to the community as a whole and how it is impacted by the patients; I’m taking care of. During this BSN course, I learned about to be compassionate with my care in seeing the bigger picture, how many people could be affected by one person’s admission and how to incorporate them into my bedside care. 5. Leadership and Education: Professional Roles and Values was able to help me put values to my knowledge and acquire more skills to be in a leadership role. During this course I learned what being a leader really was, how to help facilitate and improve on being an educator. I was able to gain knowledge on how to best educate others and improve my patient care. 6. Social Advocate: My coursework, once again, helped me look at the community as a big picture. Helping me be an advocate for each person and their needs in the community. Using the Community Health and Population course to use research and evidence-based practice on examining, identifying and solving the issue at hand. To improve care based on being an advocate. 7. Genomics and Genetics: It was a requirement to get my AMNH certificate, which helped me incorporate genomics and genetics into my work. Especially working in pediatrics, it helped me understand and incorporate different genetic variables that could be affecting my patients’ life and treatments, or even how their body would respond to medications. Awareness and knowledge of the impact of genetics on the patient's response help understand how to provide care for the patients (Xue, 2016). 8. Interpersonal Collaborations: My coursework made me be able to connect the dots on how being a healthcare worker is essential and you need to be offering your best to your patients and coworkers. Collaborating with my coworkers and working as a team has drastically improved since my BSN. Failure to have those interpersonal collaborations can result in an error that affects the patient. Something as simple as not communicating that the patient was delayed on taking their morning meds before having a PT come in to work with the patient, can end up in a drastic event for that patient.
