Egypt - Answer located near the Nile River; use the river for irrigation (water plants or
crops); at first divided into Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt; social classes based on
money and power
Nile River - Answer The world's longest river, which flows north (opposite of most rivers,
which flow north to south) and empties through the Nile River Delta into the
Meditterranean Sea. Egyptians used the river for water to drink, bathing, farming,
cooking, travel or transportation, and trade (giving on thing for another or for a kind of
money).
cataract - Answer steep rapids (water moving quickly over rocks) formed by cliffs and
boulders in a river
delta - Answer area of fertile soil (full of useful or good items for plants) at the mouth of
a river (where opens to a larger body of water); shaped like a triangle
Sahara Desert - Answer the largest desert in the world, covering most of northern Africa
Shadoof - Answer a bucket attached to a long pole, used to move water for irrigation

Lower Egypt - Answer The northern part of ancient Egypt that was lower because it was
lower on the Nile River and had a lower elevation
Narmer - Answer Egyptian King who is believed to have brought 2 Egyptian Kingdoms
together (Upper and Lower).
dynasty - Answer a line of rulers from the same family; the son of the king becomes the
next king or someone else in the family
pharaoh - Answer all-powerful king in ancient Egypt; believed to be the son of Re (sun
god)
