Incident response

Why should we consider incident response?

Whether it is a coordinated attack, stealing data and resources or just a breach of policy by a
network administrator, at some our organisation must experience a cyber-related incident. In
today’s world having access to the right skills at the right time Is essential to managing the risks out
there caused by a cyber-attack. Usually, the damage is caused by a failed response to an incident,
not the attack itself. An inefficient response could quickly turn an incident into a disaster. In order to
identify potential incidents and prepare a good incident response, you must consider the following
aspects:
- Have you recently had any weak spots in your security that might have resulted
in a compromise?
- Is your company staff competent and trained in the response process? Do they
understand their roles and responsibilities?
- Are you following the company’s protocols?
- Has the plan been tested for incidents such as ransomware?
-
The following should be recorded when an incident occurs:
- Incident reporter (The customer or UserID)
- What exactly happened
- Time of incident
- A unique ID number for the ticket, so other staff members can follow.
- Any information about the item or affected services.

Those are some of the basic questions you can ask yourself and your organisation, to determine
whether you will be able to deal with an incident in an efficient and safe way. After a basic ticket is
created, there is a range of support levels that operate to resolve and help the customer. We have
level 1 support, level 2 and level 3, if level 1 cannot help the customer they are transfer to more
advanced support team such as level 2.

Developing an IT Disaster Recovery Plan

Every bussiness should have access to a its disaster recovery plan. It begins by checking on inventory
of hardware, for example a variety of servers, desktops, laptops, and wireless devices. This would
include a range of software applications and data. The disaster recovery plan should ensure a
strategy is in place, so all information is backed up in case of a disaster. Identifying critical software
applications and data and hardware that operates them is an important factor. Making sure that
copies of a program software are available to enable re-installation on a replacement equipment,
this would prioritise hardware and software restoration.

Data Back-up

, Companies generate a large amount of data and files that are changing throughout the day. This
type of data can easily be lost, corrupted, or compromised. Loss or any corruption of data can result
in a significant loss in the business and cause disruption for customers/company.

How to develop A data Back-up Plan?

In order to develop a data back-up plan, we must identify the data on the network servers, desktops,
computers, and other wireless devices that must be backed up. Backing up hard copy vital records
can be achieved by scanning paper records into digital formats and backing them up with other
digital data.

Options available for a Data Back-up.

Tapes, cartridges, USB, portable SSD drives, when a effective back-up software is integrated into
those, it will back-up data for businesses safely and efficient. Most companies use an online
automated back-up such as clouds, which is a cost-effective solution for companies that have
constant access to an internet connection. This type of back-up is installed on the client server or
computer, and it is automatically backed up.

What is capacity management? This is a process that aims to meet bussiness requirements with an
approach that ensures infrastructure is the right size to meet present and future goals. This is mainly
connected with the ITIL Framework, which describes the most common approach to capacity
management. Each company grows on their own rate, but despite the speed, they will need to grow
their CPU’s processing, memory and storage as more information is released and generated.
Capacity planning is the overall capacity management cycle. Capacity management includes
management activities, and a range of optimisations.

ITIL 4
ITIL Helps organisations be successful at service management. The success of an organisation is
largely defined by how effective an organisation can deliver its products and services to the market
in way that meets the customer expectations and beats competitor offerings, while complying with
the legal and regulatory requirements.
