DQ 1

A Jewish family has its own culture. “A Jew means you belong to a culture that is richly tied to heritage,
religion, and tradition” (WordPress.com, 2010). At our hospital, we have a Jewish Liaison to help us to
accommodate this population needs. Sometimes it’s hard to ask a Jewish patient to change his religious
clothing to a gown for examination. There would some resistant to ask for this task, very particular of
privacy and modesty. “Physical modesty is a major concern for many observant Jews, and this generally
means observant Jews will wear certain kinds of clothing, and limit physical interactions with members
of the opposite sex” (My Jewish Learning, n.d.). The community’s liaison is a great help because he does
the explaining of the importance of examination, the need for blood test or X-rays expediting the
process. Gaining trust is important “.. showing genuine concern for the patient” (GCU, n.d.) and
involvement of the family reinforces patient compliance. The video/phone interpreter and written
instructions in patient’s language are all helpful in patient and family education. “Health care
professionals should attempt to give patient education without interjecting their personal beliefs in
words or actions. Patients rely on the information they receive to be truthful and for their best health
outcome” (GCU, n.d.).

“Culture is the characteristic pattern of attitudes, values, beliefs, and behaviors shared by members of a
society or population. Members of a cultural group share characteristics that distinguish them from
other groups. Culture gives individuals a sense of belonging to a group and creates parameters or
boundaries within which individuals in the particular culture function” (Falvo, 2011). Culture is a socially
acquired and learned habits, values, beliefs from members of a particular society.



“Embodied in culture is ethnicity. Although ethnicity is frequently used synonymously with race, it
constitutes more than just race. Ethnicity is biological and racial, and although tied to culture, may also
be separate. It refers to a common social and cultural heritage passed on to each successive generation”
