additional steps need to be taken to continue advocacy for this issue?
Many bills has been passed and legislations occurred at the state or federal level as a result of
nurse advocacy. An example of such is the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC)
legislation which was implemented on January 19, 2018. Its legislation is an outstanding
accomplishment for nursing profession, as it allows “nurses to have one multistate license, with
the authority to practice in person or via telehealth in both their home state and other eNLC
states, thereby increasing mobility across state borders and access to care while maintaining
public protection” (National Council of State Boards of Nursing, (NCSBN), 2017). This
legislation is an updated version of the foremost NLC, thus widened the NLC by allowing more
states to join and ensure uniformity in the requirement across all states. Since Jan. 19, 2018, “all
applicants for a multistate license are required to meet the same licensing requirements, which
include federal and state criminal background checks, which may be biometric” (NCSBN, 2017).
This fosters travelling nursing care and facilitate availability of nurses when disasters strike like
hurricanes, disease outbreaks like COVID-19 etc.
Additional steps that need to be taken to continue advocacy for the eNLC legislation is the
continuous effort of the nursing board to ensure all states in the country joins the eNLC . the four
states Colorado, New Mexico, Rhode Island and Wisconsin that yet to enacts eNLC legislation
must be mandated to do so to broaden the “career prospects of nurses across state lines, and help
states facing severe nurses shortage by increasing mobility, telehealth, and provide greater access
to care for states facing the greatest need of nurses. Hospital administrators and nursing leaders
in states with active eNLC must be proactive in advocacy by highlighting the benefits of joining
eNLC to states that are yet to join, as “good health knows no boundaries” (Gold, 2016).
