Making standard solution
Apparatus:
Anhydrous sodium carbonate
Weighing boat and weighing device
Spatula
Beaker
Stirring rod
Distilled water
Volumetric flasks (250cm3)
Funnel
Pipette
Safety glasses (goggles)
Method:
Before starting the experiment, I used goggles to protect my eyes from the anhydrous sodium
carbonate this is due to irritation that can be caused onto the eyes if the sodium carbonate reaches
the eyes, therefore eye irritation could occur, so goggles was used to protect the eyes from sodium
carbonate. To make the standard solution, I measured out 1.270 grams of sodium carbonate on the
weighing boat on a calibrated scale and it was then transferred to the beaker. I ensured that all the
sodium carbonate was transferred into the beaker by rinsing the weighing boat with distilled water
and poured the liquid into the beaker. I used a stirring rod to mix around the sodium carbonate and
the distilled water in the beaker I then added more of distilled water into the beaker and used the
stirring rod until the sodium carbonate was fully dissolved in the beaker. When it was mixed, I
carefully transferred the solution into the volumetric flask of 250cm3 using the funnel and rinsed the
beaker and funnel so that the solution remains where it should be. I also filled the volumetric flask
up to the meniscus line for better precision, I used a pipette to fill up the volumetric flask up to the
meniscus line. Finally, I labelled the solution with my name, date, and the concentration.
Calculations:
Concentration = moles x 100/volume
Moles 1.270/106 = 0.01198113moles

Skills I developed so far:
I learned how to calculate the concentration of sodium carbonate
Calibrating the balance
Fill the conical flask with distilled water and sodium carbonate solution up to the line of
