Soil and Soil Erosion
How soils are formed
Soil - thin upper layer of the earth's crust
- Minerals : weathered over time from underlying parent bedrock
- Organic matter : decaying plant and animal remains, slowly decomposed by
microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, worms and organisms (biota) to form humus)
- air
- water
- biota
minerals - inorganic chemicals found in rocks
organic matter - substances that contain organic chemicals which contain atoms of
carbon
micro-organisms - tiny organisms in soil that help to add plant and animal remains
into soil in the form of humus
organisms - any living things
biota - living organisms , plants, animals, fungi, bacteria
