POPULATION ECOLOGY
Ecology :
➔ The study of all relationships among organisms and their abiotic environments
Population Ecology
➔ Fluctuations in the size of a population and the factors that regulate these
fluctuations
➔ Individuals live together in populations, different populations together make a
community, different Communities Together with non-living things in the
surrounding makeup an ecosystem, all ecosystems in the world make up the
biosphere

Biosphere -Parts of the Earth when living organisms are found
Ecosystem - made up of groups of different species that interact with each other
and with their environment
An organism - individual form of life that are capable of growing and reproducing
Community - a group of different species that inhabit and interact in a particular
area
A Species - a group of closely related organisms that are similar to each other and
are capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring
An Individual - a single organism capable of independent existence
A population - a group of organisms of the same species that occur in the same
area and can breed freely with each other.

What affect the size of a population

● Natality
● Mortality
● Immigrating
● Emmigration
A population will grow if mortality and immigration exceeds mortality and emigration
and visa versa
Remain stable when the above are all equal
Closed population - no immigration or emigration

Limiting factors of a population
Factors that help regulate the growth of a population :
- Density independent factors - limit the growth as a result of natural factors
- Physical factors - rainfall, temp, humidity, acidity
- Catastrophic events - floods, fire drought, volcanic eruptions, tsunami
- Density dependent factors - greater effect when population density is high
- Competition for resources - food, light, oxygen, water
- More easily be found by predators
