Assignment 3: Strategies and
Resources

I am continuing my work experience placement at the office of a local Chamber of Commerce. The
Chamber of Commerce is preparing materials that examine the strategic and operational approaches
to developing international trade and I have been asked to prepare a research study that evaluates
the success of the strategies and resources used by one business, taken from either the
manufacturing or service sector of the economy, and that currently trades internationally.



McDonalds is an international fast-food company that was founded in 1940 by Richard and Maurice
McDonald in California which started as a hamburger stand and later turned into a franchise. The
company is currently the world’s largest restaurant franchise in term of revenue as in 2019 the
company had a revenue of $21.08 billion. The company serves more than 69 million customers a day
and operates in more than 100 countries with over 37,000 stores. The company serves a range of
different products like hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries, breakfast items, soft drinks, milkshakes,
wraps, desserts and more. The company has over 1.7 million employees which is the second most
employees in the world. The company is recognised worldwide as they are one the world’s most
famous companies.

I chose McDonalds as the company is the world’s largest fast-food chain with restaurants all around
the world in many different cultures and religions. With the company operating in many different
countries this has led the company to having to introduce new product and items to suit the needs
and wants of that specific culture in the country they are operating in which is why the company has
been able to operate under their famous brand in different cultures and areas.

McDonalds sell a wide range of products hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries, breakfast items, soft
drinks, milkshakes, wraps, desserts, salads, fish, smoothies, and fruit. The company has a lot of
signature items like the big mac which is their signature burger and the happy meal which is a for
kids that has a toy that comes with the food.



How McDonalds adapts on the international market

The company changes it menu to fit the consumers need and want and as they operate in over 100
countries there are many cultures that the company caters for in the operations.




This is a Honey Chicken Rice Bowl which
one of the products in McDonalds China
menu and this is only in China and this is
mainly to do with the countries culture as
many people for example in the UK won’t
like this type of food.




This is a peasant soup which is in the
company’s Portugal menu and this is again
due to the culture of the country as many
people won’t like that type of product if they
are not from that country.




This is a Chicken Maharaja Burger
which is in the company’s India menu
and as the country mostly likes spicy
food, they will like this burger which is
why McDonalds has put it on their
menu.
