Dear Student
1. INTRODUCTION
The 2020 academic year is slowly drawing to a close. At this stage you should start to focus on
the upcoming January/February 2021 examination period.
We trust that you made sure you completed and submitted the compulsory Assignments
01, 02 and 03 and covered the contents of the module as a whole. Late submission of these
assignments are now closed. The general quality of the assignments submitted have ranged from
weak, reasonable to good, and then a selected number of very good assignments which adhered
to the instructions in Tutorial Letter 101/2020. In addition, it seems as if most students understood
the content well and were able to present and argue the questions in an acceptable manner.
However, due to a lack of properly cited sources throughout, plagiarism was a huge problem that
seriously affected the marks. A word of thanks to those students who displayed a little extra effort
by consulting the prescribed sources and additional sources, and cited all sources in their
assignments as instructed. You have to remember that you are busy acquiring writing and
research skills for present and future applications.
As we have explained in Tutorial letter 101/2020, there were several aims which you had to keep
in mind during the year. In line with the aims, the following learning outcomes should also have
been achieved:
Learning outcomes 1 and 2 (Part A: Philosophy of education)
o Reflecting on different philosophical discourses in Philosophy of education to
solve educational problems.
o Understanding the different philosophies of education and the implications that each has
for teaching and learning
Learning outcomes 3 and 4 (Part B: Sociology of education)
o Reflect critically on the nature and scope of key theories and perspectives grounded in the
Sociology of education addressing social processes influencing the schooling system.
o Examine the practices in Sociology of education with reference to the school as social
construct of education to address societal inequalities and promote social justice.
Therefore, take note: Your development as a postgraduate student will be assessed in the
forthcoming examination paper when we determine whether you have successfully achieved
these learning outcomes and mastered the academic skills needed to be awarded a pass mark
or more.
2. ASSESSMENT OF THE ASSIGNMENTS: % INDICATORS
This serves as an example of the way in which your assignments were assessed in general:
20 – 49%:
o Did not follow instructions in Tutorial Letter 101/2020.
o Poor writing skills.
