§ Chemical equations show chemical reactions
§ You can have word equations and symbol equations
§ The chemicals on the left-hand side of the equation are the reactants and the
chemicals on the right-hand side are the products
E.g. magnesium + oxygen -> magnesium oxide (word equation)
2Mg + O2 -> 2MgO (symbol equation)
, Symbol equations need to be balanced
§ There must always be the same number of atoms on each
side of the equation
§ You can balance symbol equations by putting numbers in
front of the formulas
§ You can’t put the number afterwards or edit the formula for
example you can’t change O2 to O3.
