ASSIGNMENT 02
YEAR MODULE

, PERSUASIVE PROSE

Covid-19 has become a battle that every individual needs to fight. This global
pandemic has kept everyone on their toes. Presidents across the world have
been actively addressing and updating their nations. On the 14th of April 2020,
President Yoweri K. Museveni gave his fourth address on Covid-19. In this
essay I would be focusing on the various persuasive and language strategies
used in this speech.
In the text given of the address speech by the President of Uganda, he
addresses the people of his country as, “Countrymen and Countrywomen,”
This makes it clear to us that the target audience of this speech is all people,
men and women, of the country Uganda. His target audience is large and vast,
with the hopes that his instructions and concerns reach every citizen of his
country.
In the introduction paragraph the president starts of by saying, “Greetings and
congratulations”. He starts of the speech with congratulating everyone and by
doing this he motivates and creates hope in a difficult time. He ensures that
the listeners pay heed to his words rather than being filled with anxiousness
and fear. The president introduces his speech in the introduction paragraph. In
this sentence we find out that the rest of the speech will be addressing the
Covid-19 virus.
Throughout the speech lexical cohesion is used through synonymy in words
with similar meaning such as “infect”, “contamination” and “spread”. Inclusive
words such as “you” and “we” are used to address those who are listening.
This creates a personal connection between the words of the president and
the listener. The speech also contains a lot of repetition. The words “cough”
and “sneeze” are repeated to emphasis and remind the listeners of the various
ways the virus can be transmitted.
The president uses simple English in his speech. He ensures that the listeners
do not misinterpret any information and that they experience no difficulties in
understanding his words. He also explains, “The virus spreads in, really, two
ways.” In his explanation, the president breaks down these two ways into
detail. He also uses words like, “kwetsyamura”, “kukorora” and “orwooya”;
which belongs to the native language of Uganda, to ensure they understand
exactly how this virus can contaminate surfaces and how it is spread. The
