Introduction of the History of Mental Health treatment within the Criminal Justice System
This section will review the history and treatment of individuals within the criminal
Justice system who have been impacted by mental health concerns. Practices from early colonial
times through modern times will be discussed and compared to determine effectiveness and
growth of and in our criminal justice system.
Historical Data on Mental Health treatment.
Evidence based practices will be reviewed for their effectiveness with treating mental
health concerns from charges to incarceration. This section will also include the level of
awareness of mental health conditions by law enforcement, the court system, and the prison
system. The analysis of mental health awareness will review the treatment of individuals with
mental health concerns by those in power. A detailed analysis of interventions utilized to treat
and combat mental health will be performed which will enable a comprehensive overview on the
effectiveness of our criminal justice service delivery as it relates to mental health concerns.
Policies which address mental health treatment and service delivery.
This section will review historical data on policies utilized to provide service delivery as
it relates to those with mental health concerns. Identification of specific treatment goals and
solution-focused interventions will be reviewed using historical research and modern analysis.
Policies related to service delivery from crime to incarceration will be evaluated and discussed.
Comparisons of evidence-based interventions utilized in the court system, prison system, and
rehabilitation/half-way houses will be examined to understand and determine the effectiveness of
mental health treatment. Areas which can use enhancement and procedural outcomes will be
identified and discussed for effectiveness.
