Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to draw your attention to important areas of the
study guide. The examination paper usually contains theoretical and application-type
questions. Most of the questions set in this assignment are the type of theoretical and
application-type questions you can expect to find in the examination.
Assessment criteria
The following assessment criteria will be used to assess your assignment:
A description and evaluation of the skill set, and knowledge/s required of a
language teacher.
An understanding of the values and attitudes that a language teacher should
possess.
The process approach to writing is applied to a descriptive essay.
The communicative approach to language teaching is clearly described.
Practical examples of applying the communicative approach in a language
classroom are discussed.
A learner-centred approach is described.
Practical examples of applying the learner-centred approach in a language
classroom are discussed.
Answer two questions. Question 1 is compulsory. Choose either question 2 or question 3.
Question 1
Write an essay of 1000 words (3-4 pages) on the following topic:
What values, skills, attitudes and knowledge/s do you believe you require to be a
competent language teacher?
To answer this question, you must refer to:
The content knowledge (skills) of teaching a language in your study guide. You
may refer to any aspect/s of the study guide you find valuable when answering
the above question.
The CAPS for the senior phase, especially the introductory pages.
Your teaching practice experience.
Your own experience of being a learner at school and a student at University.

To answer this question, you must:

Explain to the learners how they should go about when writing a descriptive essay,
using each of these steps.
Note: You will not be awarded any marks for a general discussion on the process approach to
writing. You must refer to writing a descriptive essay throughout your discussion.
