Title: B, Lerner #PL01 Introduction to Medical Microbiology
Per graded lab, Your title should be BL01 Intro... You don't need to use PL anymore.
Objective: To understand course objectives, basic equipment used, as well as general lab safety
while working in a lab setting. Also, to understand how to create a lab notebook that is well
organized. All documentation should be recorded in a lab notebook while completing a lab.
Including the title, the objective (personal benefit to recall what was done during that lab), the
procedure (step by step instructions of what was done in that lab, along with any deviations
from the standard protocol), the notes (helpful information that does not fall into the procedure
section but that one would want to remember from the lab), and the results (the last section
which summarizes the findings during the lab and the main points of the lab).
Procedure:
1. Step by step protocol recorded here
a. Including:
i. What chemicals were used
ii. growth conditions
iii. temperature
iv. what type of plates were used?
2. Indicate any deviations that may occur during the experiment
a. Write any deviations in red (anything that is not standard protocol) that occurred
i. Deviations - something that absolutely stands out and is different than
the standard protocol
Notes: Additional (helpful) information, things that do not fall directly in the procedure
Course Objectives –
, o Cultivation of samples (growth conditions)
equipment used
the cultivation of growth conditions of the samples in the lab settings
o Identification of samples (biochemical assays)
tests available
to look and determine what bacteria or what pathogens a patient may
have
o Evaluation of samples (microscopy)
visualization and recognition of key variables (characteristics) of each
pathogen
Basic Equipment
o Cleaning – working in a sterile environment to ensure everyone stays healthy
Autoclave – device that uses heat, pressure, and steam equipment in a
lab to sterile equipment and also any samples that you might need to kill
after using them
Temperature – above 125 degrees C
Come in different sizes
Does not just use dry air, uses hot steam
o steam is much more efficient than dry air to sterile
something
o Dry hot air takes a couple hours to achieve a sterile
condition
o Hot steam only will take a couple mins to achieve a sterile
environment
o Need to be very careful when opening autoclave when
finished using it because very hot steam will come out, so
