In this part of the assignment, I will be discussing the internal, external and
competitive environment on Asda. The environment in which Asda operates can
have a large impact on the success of this supermarket. The internal and external
factors of Asda could affect their success. The internal and external factors that
affects the organisation could have weaknesses and strengths. 1 Examples of internal
factors are inbound logistics, operation management, outbound logistics, service and
other supporting services.2 Examples of external factors of Asda are PESTLE
(political factors, economical factors, social factors, technological factors, legal
factors and environmental factors).3

The internal business environment is a combination of factors that impact the
success and approach of operations. 4 The internal factors that have an impact on
Asda are corporate culture, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and business
ethics.5 Corporate culture means the values and standards shared by people and
groups within an organisation6; corporate culture also means the beliefs and
7
behaviours that determine how a company’s employees and manager interacts.
Corporate culture in Asda’s community life is fun and happier. This can be backed up
by Asda’s website8 where it talks about having a career at Asda makes lives easier,
fun and happier.9 This is because workers/employees get freedom to what they do
the best. In Asda, workers will get training, support and development to chase what
they want out of their career. 10 On the website called Corporate Culture, 11 they

campaigning in stores.12 Corporate culture is one of the UK’s leading employee
engagement and culture agencies. They provide strategic and creative expertise that
helps companies deliver imaginative programmes and communications for

Asda encompasses campaigns and communication programmes to help position the
supermarkets as a leader in trustworthy business. 14 More than 500 stores were
provided with employee toolkits, briefing materials, branded clothing and a
designated Community Life Hub, encouraging customers and their families to join in.
15
Asda’s mission is the ”most trusted retailer” and their purpose is to ”Save Money.
Live Better”16.

Firstly, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is defined as a business’ decision to
accept responsibility to its stakeholders for its social, environmental and ethical
17
action. This includes reducing their carbon footprint, volunteering in the
18
community, using fair trade materials etc. At Asda, they take their corporate social
responsibility seriously. This is because they believe that supporting sustainability
can make their products even more affordable for their customers as well as
safeguarding the environment, we live in. The companies’ sustainability
commitments are based on the belief that protecting the environment and saving
people money go hand in hand. 19 Asda have clear aims – to reduce the
environmental impact of our operations, the goods and services we sell, and the
suppliers that make them.20 This can be backed up by Asda’s website on ”Better
Planet”21 and Asda suppliers.22 On both pages, they reduce the plastics and
packaging on their products, use energy through their operation e.g. fridges to
checkouts, oven to lighting, recycling cardboard, reusing fixtures and fittings,
