Lecture 6: Animation & Interactivity
Multimedia and animated elements are a combination of text, images, animation, audio, and video.
Issues:
a. Not all compatible with all browsers and devices
b. Possible need for browser plug-ins
c. Longer download time
d. Substantial use of storage space on the host server
e. Creating professional quality multimedia requires expertise and budget
Guidelines to follow
a. Adapt the content based on the visitor’s speed or device
b. Inform the visitor of plug-ins and provide links to any downloads if necessary
c. Provide options for full-screen viewing
d. Provide text equivalents for all multimedia elements
e. Break audio or video files into short segments
f. Embed instead of including source media (youtube, flickr, spotify)
1. Animation- Uses a fast-paced presentation of changing static images to simulate motion
➢ Creation Process
▪ Frame-by-frame animation- movements are drawn out on individual frames
▪ Animation with tweening - software creates necessary frames between start and end
of animation.
➢ Animated GIFs (.gif)- file that comes with multiple animated frames
▪ Frames-per-second (fps)
▪ Size
➢ Flash Animation (.swf)
▪ Advantages and Disadvantages
2. Interactivity
➢ UX-Driven Interactivity- user experience driven interactivity
➢ Web-based Forms- Include text box(es), check box(es), radio button(s), and a drop down
button menu. Multiple checkboxes can be checked, but you can only select 1 radio button.
➢ Breaking a form into multiple form tags decrease web accessibility because it makes it harder
for screen readers
