ASSIGNMENT 02
2022
, 2.1 There are various techniques which teachers can use to support learners to express
and clarify their own thinking; there is need to build confidence in learners, lack of
confidence is a problem that prevents many students from succeeding in mathematics.
Teachers have to encourage questioning and make space for curiosity i.e. students
need to ask for clarification when they need to better understand something. There is
also need to emphasize conceptual understanding; students should work very hard to
understand maths concepts and when to apply them. There is need to provide authentic
problems that increase student`s drive to engage with maths; students` desire, initiative
and motivation plays a significant role in students success in mathematics and finally
sharing of positive attitude towards is greater importance in helping students to
succeeding, parents support and encouraged is highly recommended and help kids to
find mentors when they are not able to answer some of the questions.
2.2 Distributive property to multiply (96*85)
96 × (100-15)
96 ×100 – 96 × 15
=9600 – 1440
= 8160
2.3.1 The first mathematical error that Phina committed on the first mathematical
problem was to omit initially placing a zero when multiplying by a digit under tens in this
case 6. The common error which was committed in all the three problems was to not
carrying forward the digit under tens from the product of the first part multiplication to
the next second part of the multiplication process in all the three instances.
2.3.2 The root cause of the above student error is lack of understanding of the values
represented by digits in a given number value (s); i.e. units, tens, hundredths,
thousandths etc. Failing to understand the concept of number values impose great
challenge to students in solving various mathematical problems.
