Summary NR 512: Week 6 Health IT Topic and Its Impact. Chamberlain College of Nursing. What was the HealthIT Topic you selected related to your specialty? Why did you select it? How will this impact your practice? The HealthIT Topic that I chose was the mobile world of telehealth. Telemedicine is often interchangeably used with telehealth, which is a broader term that covers remote healthcare services. Telehealth encompasses a broad variety of technologies to deliver efficient care through the use of electronic communication devices. With technological advances growing at a rapid rate, telehealth has helped to decrease healthcare costs, reduce transportation time, improve quality of care, and improve patient access to specialists and healthcare providers (Oliveira & da Hora Sales, 2017).

NR 512: Week 6 Health IT Topic and Its Impact
What was the HealthIT Topic you selected related to your specialty? Why did you
select it? How will this impact your practice?

The HealthIT Topic that I chose was the mobile world of telehealth. Telemedicine is
often interchangeably used with telehealth, which is a broader term that covers remote
healthcare services. Telehealth encompasses a broad variety of technologies to deliver
efficient care through the use of electronic communication devices. With technological
advances growing at a rapid rate, telehealth has helped to decrease healthcare costs,
reduce transportation time, improve quality of care, and improve patient access to
specialists and healthcare providers (Oliveira & da Hora Sales, 2017).

I selected the topic of telehealth because it has become an effective delivery platform
that meets and attracts consumer needs in the medical field. As both a consumer and a
healthcare provider, I want healthcare that is convenient, easy-to-access, cost-effective,
and quality-focused. In today’s healthcare, technology plays a vital role in delivering
efficient patient care in many clinical and non-clinical settings. Many patients are
comfortable with using mobile devices (computers, tablets, and cellular phones) on a
daily basis. According to Tucker (2015), there are studies that show 76% of patients
select accessibility over in-person interaction. I believe it is important for healthcare
professionals to utilize telehealth technology to achieve positive outcomes and
healthcare goals to individuals who are dealing with acute or chronic diseases.

The use of telehealth has grown exponentially in the healthcare industry. It has become
a positive tool to support the development of health planning, education, and
interpersonal relationships. It has now become a reality to initiate real-time
videoconferencing between a patient and a physician for an annual physical or a follow-
up visit. The patient’s medical history, along with lists of medications and allergies, are
incorporated into the system for the physician to review while conversing with the
patient in real-time. Videoconferencing can also be done between physicians of varying
specialities for consultation. The exchange of medical information from one site to
another through electronic communications makes the use of telehealth convenient and
user-friendly for consumers and patients (Oliveira & da Hora Sales, 2017). Using
electronic communication to deliver medical intervention, prescribe medication, facilitate
access to specialists, provide education, and ensure therapeutic support is a positive
impact on the future of healthcare delivery. As a future nurse practitioner, it is important
to integrate telehealth services into one’s healthcare plan and facilitate access to
specialists and support programs needed to ensure quality outcomes.
