Introduction


Educational policies are important because teachers need to follow these rules to
help them teach students efficiently, fairly, and safely. I aim to discuss the role of
educational policies further. With a focus on the language in Educational policy Act
27 of 1996. I will also explain the dilemmas and contradictions this policy poses.


The role of policy in Education:
Governing bodies need to be in alignment with the Constitution and the South
African schools act 84 of 1990. The constitution is the final authority or law in the
land.
The role of EDUCATIONAL POLICY is to ensure that all learners have access to
quality education without discrimination and makes schooling compulsory for
children aged seven to 15. It provides for two types of schools namely independent
and public schools.
The main purpose of the policies in Education:


Is to provide a uniform system for the organisation, governance and funding of
schools.
In section 6 of the schools act on language policy it says that the governing body
may choose the language that is to be used for teaching and learning in a school.
Section 6 (2) -Says the language policy of the school must comply with the
Constitution.
Section 6 ( 3) -Says no form of discrimination may be practised when implementing
language policy.
The case study of the Mikro Primary school and another Western Cape Minister of
Education is an example of a conflict and contradictions that occurred. It was not
possible to offer English or Zulu in that school because the demographics of the
school body was 100 % Afrikaans. The school said it was unlawful and the Minister
