5. SECTION A: EMERGENT MATHEMATICS
ACTIVITY 1 - PLAN AND DESIGN RESOURCES FOR GRADE R
Plan and design resources suitable for Grade R for ONE of the following Shape and Space activities:
1. An obstacle course
2. A treasure hunt
3. An activity about 2D shapes
4. An activity about 3D shapes
Grade: R Topic: An activity about 2D
Ask your mentor teacher about the possible teaching and learning resources that can be
used to teach the topic you selected and list them here.
• Pop sticks and matchsticks are versatile learning materials, they make great resource
for creating 2D shapes
• Shape collages- using a variety of shapes cut from textured papers and buttons to
create 2D shapes
• Pattern blocks- not only will learners learn about 2D shapes, but they will also learn
mathematical concepts such as symmetry, tessellation, pattern, sorting, counting and
so much more.
From your list above, select the teaching and learning resources that you can use to
introduce your lesson and explain how you will design them. Take pictures of the resources
and paste them in the space below
I will use the pop sticks to create different 2D shapes. Since they are versatile in
teaching, I can use self-correcting pop stick puzzles using one colour for each shape,
writing the name of each shape on each pop stick, and including the number of
sides/corners.

I will use pattern blocks to help them make 2D shapes. In the process, they will pick
up mathematical concepts like symmetry, tessellation, pattern, sorting, counting and
many more.
Lastly, I will use shape collages to help learners relate shapes with real life things
like buildings, rockets and so on.
