Week 2 Discussion: Research, Practice Problems, and Questions
Having worked in the healthcare field for several years, I have noticed several clinical
issues and practices that can be changed for the benefit of the patients, the nurses, the
physicians, and all the other stakeholders in healthcare. I have worked with the Emergency
Department in the recent past, and most of the patients that I have dealt with are those who in
pain and requires immediate addressing. In most cases, when the patient issue has been
addressed, the patient becomes more comfortable and it is then easy for the nurse or
physician to talk to the patient and address the other issues (Houser, 2018). Therefore, I have
come to the conclusion that it is important to address the pain needs of the patient
immediately so that the nurse of physician can have a good time to diagnose the patient
appropriately and ensure positive patient outcomes. Pain is always a top concern for patients
and when it is relieved quickly, the reviews for the emergency department and the concerned
healthcare professional will increase. On the other hand, when a patient believes that his/her
pain is not being addressed quickly, the same will also be reflected in the reviews and patient
satisfactory scores.
This topic is important to me because I consider it as the first step in proper diagnosis
of the patient and in ensuring positive patient outcomes. I believe that in the Emergency
Department, when a paining patient is made comfortable by addressing the pain needs
immediately and quickly, the nurse and the physicians then gets time to talk to the patient
leading to proper diagnosis (Dewhirst et al., 2017). This is as opposed to treating a patient
who is in pain, is stressed, and does not think that the nurses and physicians are doing enough
to make him/her comfortable. Therefore, I chose this problem/topic because it is the first and
important step for nurses and physicians in the emergency unit.
