Define work done, energy, kinetic energy, gravitational potential energy, elastic potential
energy and power. You must use formulae in your definitions and give SI units of each
quantity in your formula.

Work Done- work done is the force being done by the object, work is the amount of energy
transfer so the force it takes to move a certain object. Work done is measured in joules (J),
force is measured in newtons (N) and distance is measured in metres (m).
work done = force × distance(m)

Energy- energy has different meanings in science. Energy is the potential of a physical
system that has to change, the ability to do work. Energy is never destroyed, but it can also
be converted from one form to another.

Kinetic Energy- kinetic energy is the energy the object holds due to its motion. By applying
a force to an object it does work, after work done the energy has been transferred, the
object then has a new constant speed. The energy that has been transferred is known as
kinetic energy.
kinetic energy(J) = ½ x mass(kg) x (velocity)(m/s)²




Gravitational Potential Energy- Gravitational potential energy is energy an object holds
because of its position in a gravitational field. The expression for gravitational potential
energy comes from the law of gravity and it is equal to the work done against gravity to
bring a mass to a given point in space.
GPE = mass(kg) x gravitational field strength(N/kg) x height(m)



Elastic Potential Energy- Elastic potential energy is energy stored as a result of applying a
force to deform an elastic object. It is measured in joules (J), spring constant is measured in
newtons per metre (N/m), extension is measured in metres (m).
Elastic potential energy(J) = 0.5 x spring constant(N/m)x extension²(m)

Power- Power is how fast energy is transferred or transformed due to work done on the
object. Power is measured in watts (W), work done is measured in joules (J), time is
measured in seconds (s).
Power(W) = work done(J) ÷ time taken(s)
