600-700 word Essay on Using Authentic Materials and the Internet
Please write the essay under the four headings given.
a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching:
The teacher is given a lot of freedom in how they want to teach the language when they use
authentic material as opposed to the material in course books; They are able to creatively devise
their own activities and comprehension questions from authentic texts which is not possible with
course book material. The value of using authentic materials such as newspaper or magazine
articles is that they enable students to not only know what is happening realistically in the country
of the foreign language they are learning but also to build the vocabulary and grammar associated
with real life issues. Students can engage in discussions that are authentic using actual language
that is used daily.
b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items. Rationale for changes to
text, if applicable.
I selected this text because I feel it will be of interest to the adult students because it is interesting,
positive, realistic and current. It represents what is happening in the English speaking country (UK)
in present times; The subject of business in this Brexit, post-pandemic and increasingly digitised
era is discussed in many conversations and in the media. The 15 students will therefore be able to
partake of conversations and better understand the news or articles if they learn and revise
vocabulary and grammar found in this type of article. In addition, five of the students are workers
and this article is about the world of business.
I chose to pre-teach the following 12 words and phrases:
“...navigating the post-pandemic world”
“Now’s the time for London’s entrepreneurs to level up”
“They’re the backbone of this city”
“...coming out of the woods and can breathe again”
