Introduction
In this unit I will be talking about the needs of the individual
with additional needs and factors that may affect them such
as social, emotional, physical and intellectual factors. I will
also be talking about the effect the condition has on the
individual as well as the people around them. This report will
also include professionals that help these individuals
overcome their difficulties or barriers and the qualifications
and standards required for them to be able to care for the
individual with additional needs.
What is the individuals additional need
Disability is anything that prevents an individual from living
their daily lives, this mean hey have additionals needs as their
are things required to be done for them to live their lives
easier. Additional needs are task an individual can’t do for
themselves such as bathing, eating etc. this means they have
to be supported due to the needs they have. Different people
will have different additionals need because their needs are
different. For example the additional needs for someone who
uses as wheelchair like rebecca would be how to help her
with different barriers she might experience because for
example not everywhere may have a wheelchair ramp. So her
additional need would be how she can be supported with
thing such as getting dressed, washing and going out as she is
unable to do this due to lack of movement below her waist.
,For steve his additional needs are different because of the
complications of his multiple sclerosis he has problems with
his vision so he requires different needs. This may cause steve
to feel angry at his may feel like he is losing his sight and may
require time to get used to it. This may make him feel lonely
as he may not be able to do things he did before as it may
have to adapt his lifestyle to his needs.
Mild moderate and severe
Individuals with mild learning disability usually don’t have
troubles communicating but may require time to understand
and process complex sentence (An introduction to supporting
people with a learning disability, 2012). Individuals with these
disability can easily get frustrated as what they are learning
doesn't make sense to them because they are not able to
comprehend information as easily as others. These means it
takes longer for them to learn as they may not understand
what is being taught. This individuals usually end up going to
special school due to their need of requiring a lot of attention
because they may require a longer time to learn what others
are learning. Most kids who go have mild learning disability
also end up going to special school as they may feel left out in
class because they are not able to learn at the same pace as
other and would require to be taken out of class at times to
be supported by a special need teacher. Meanwhile if they
were to be in a special need school they would be with other
,like them and so won’t feel left out as they would all be
learning at the same pace.
Individuals with moderate learning disability can still
communicate how they want but may require help to carry
on daily tasks (An introduction to supporting people with a
learning disability, 2012). For example they may not be able
to go out shopping alone and may require a carer to go along
with them. The support individual receive differ between
individuals capacity to perform day to day tasks. For example,
if an individual with moderate learning disability was to go
shopping alone, they may find it hard to explain themselves
due to their inability to express themselves well and may also
find it hard to learn due to their low cognitive ability.
Severe and profound learning disability is when an individual
has multiple disabilities so requires a lot of support to carry
on daily tasks because they need help with various tasks such
as speaking, hearing, seeing and moving, therefore an
effective communication and promoting of choices is
important so the individual will be able to be independent
while being involved with decisions about their care (nhs.uk,
2019). These individuals usually have to learn makaton or
sign language because this is an easier way for them to
communicate as it is difficult for them to use spoken word.
(nhs.uk, 2019) states Individuals with profound learning
disability will have trouble consuming their food without
assistance. Some will also need a carer who will bath them or
, maybe their bathroom could be changed and a disabled toilet
could be installed instead to support their disability this way
they have some independents.
Steve’s has moderate to severe multiple sclerosis because the
symptoms of the severe sclerosis are sight loss and being
unable to walk properly but the symptoms for moderate
sclerosis would still being able to walk. However steve can
still walk but he may require assistance as he is losing his
balance. Rebecca’s disability is severe to profound disability
and this is because she has the highest level of paralysis as
she has quadriplegia which means she is paralysed on her
four limbs so she has a physical life limiting condition as there
isn’t really any cure for quadriplegia.

brain, spinal cord or optical nerve. It could also affect all three
but this depends on how severe the individuals condition is.
This suggests the individual can suffer from mental ill health,
walking complications and eye issues. It can affect the
individual vision, hearing, speaking, swallowing and
breathing. (Healthline, 2019) comments that it is uncommon
for the individual to experience uneasiness, depression and
some level of psychological impairment. This suggests the
individual experience more physical pain. However if the
physical pain are severe this can lead to decline in stable
mental state.
