Chapter 11 - Julia Roberts without the Mouth
Mrs Breytenbach asks Lien to get someone to help her clean the prop room before they can
start rehearsing during the Afrikaans lesson. Lien asks Miemie. While Mrs Breytenbach is out,
they start playing with the costumes. They laugh until they cry. Lien finds a wig and glasses that
make her look like Julia Roberts. It’s the most fun she’s had in years. The room’s smell makes
her feel at home.
Donovan and Dirkie are still grumpy with each other. Sue-Ellen comes in with her baby. She is tall
and skinny with bright red nails. Lien can’t believe she just had a baby. While she makes coffee,
she listens to Sue-Ellen tell Donovan how much she dislikes the baby and how her husband,
Peet, works. After a while, Lien can't hear the conversation anymore. When Sue-Ellen leaves,
Donovan tells Lien that Sue-Ellen is starting to work again on Monday. Lien can still receive a
free haircut once a month and they will still sponsor the cricket team. However, Lien won’t work
for them anymore. She asks Donovan to never call her “Angel” again.
Lien goes to see a travel agency. It will cost her a
minimum of ten thousand Rand to live in London. This
includes visa costs, the plane ticket, and the travel
agency’s fees. She also needs twenty thousand Rand in
her bank account temporarily to show the British
government that she will be able to take care of herself.

into their accounts and then they send the money back
after a while. Lien will only be able to stay there for two
years and only work for one of them. This is part of the
