Signs and sign system

1.1.1. Signs refer to gestures or actions used to communicate information or
instructions. Sign systems involves the study of how signs altogether form a sign
system (Fourie, 2018: 150). Language is an example of a sign system, television
(which mainly comprise of audio-visual signs) is a sign system, nonverbal
communication (gestures, facial expressions) is another example of a sign
system (Fourie, 2018: 150).



Codes

1.1.2. When it comes to codes, signs are connected to one another by means of codes
which are comprehended by the users; various sign systems are related to one
another by means of various codes (Fourie, 2018: 150). For example, the
dialogue in a film and the images in the film related to one another using the
camera and editing techniques (codes) (Fourie, 2018: 150).
