Unit 2 assignment 6
Task 1
M214 and M209 are considered to be non-specialist labs because they do not have
every element specific with science, therefore can only be used for certain experiments.
This is because these laboratories do not include specific equipment - for example flow
cabinets.
Task 2
General equipment
Gas taps - a gas tap is used in a science laboratory to
provide gas for experiments. This gas can be used for
powering Bunsen burners, which is essential for many
experiments - like crystallization. This provides students with
the ability to complete a range of experiments - suited to
microbiology in specific and so carry out research. They can
be controlled by turning the valve which opens and closes
the pathway out of the tap for the gas. Gas taps in the
college labs are yellow, purely to emphasise hazards and
risks of gas being left on.
Tables - a table is an ultimate essential within a school
science laboratory as they are used for students to carry
out practicals safely and effectively, gaining research on
unknown substances etc. They also provide students with
a space of their own where they can take notes and keep
information written down. For microbiology labs, tables are
great as they are the perfect height for experiments to be
carried out and provide a flat surface too.
, Unit 2 assignment 6
Chairs/stalls - a chair is important for any laboratory because they
provide students with seats, preventing them from getting bored
standing up - therefore staying focused. Notes can be taken whilst
seated which keeps all students to a certain space or section on
their allocated table which makes the lab organised. Organisation is
key in laboratories as there is multiple hazards. However, chairs
must be tucked under the table or moved away when completing
experiments for safety - consequently, students must maintain stood
up.
Plug sockets - a plug socket is general
equipment for a laboratory because they
provide electricity to power equipment like
microscopes, collaborators and ph metres. In
microbiology, students study cell tissues with
microscopes or can require a lamp when
investigating the rate of photosynthesis. When
they are not in use, switches must be off.
Fire extinguisher - a fire extinguisher is necessary for a safe
working science laboratory. This is health and safety
equipment which must be in any laboratory. This is because
there is a risk of a fire occurring in a microbiology science lab
which could result from numerous experiments. For example,
any practical involving a Bunsen burner as the flame may
catch light with any medium used and create a bigger flame.
Additionally, the mixing of certain substances could potentially
lead to explosions depending on their reactivity and what they
are mixed with. Fire extinguishers contain the fire which
prevents spreading as it will put out the fire.
