Section A. Unpacking the Essay Question
The first instruction word that I came across was identify. The first sentence of section B
requires students to simply point out and describe the structures of the texts on page 145 of
the tutorial letter. Other instruction words that I stumbled upon in section B was specify and
briefly explain. The section required students to provide details about the introduction, body
and conclusion of the text that they were given and to give a short interpretation of the text to
substantiate the texts purpose. . The dog went outside to play with the ball on Saturday.
The next instruction word is once again, identify which is found in section C. However, this
time students needed to spot and point out a thesis statement from the text provided to them.
Another one being justify, which means that students had to provide adequate reasoning’s for
their choice of topics, concluding sentences and thesis statement in less than 350 words. Okay
In the last section we come across the word identify, yet again. Here students have to list
three discourse features from the text on which the section is based. Thereafter, students need
to critically analyse the function that these discourse features serve. To critically analyse
students need to break the information provided to them in simpler parts and fully examine
the purpose of these features. During section D students need to show that they deeply
understand the extract provided by demonstrating knowledge of its purpose.
, Section B: Basic Outline of the Essay
The aim of an introduction is to provide a short summary of what the text is essentially about
before going into your main arguments. The introduction of the text consists of the first two
paragraphs, whereby the writer mentions “the COVID19 virus”, “pandemic”, as well as the
“spread of disinformation, fake news and doctored videos” also known as “infodemic”.
Therefore creating the impression that the text is centred on the misinformation that has been
circulating through widespread media.
The body of any essay or text should fully explain and elaborate on the fundamental
information given in the introduction of the text. Paragraphs 3 and 4 consist of the “body” of
the text as they provide a deep clarification of the topic. Paragraph 3 demonstrated the
importance of media and the human need to learn more information about the pandemic as
well as the urgency that countries need to take to help control the infodemic, whilst paragraph
4 explained the roles and responsibilities of media platforms and mentioned the United
Nation’s campaign for “verified information” to help curb the increasing infodemic.
Paragraph 5 consists of the texts conclusion. A conclusion needs to summarize the writer’s
main arguments and opinions that they made throughout the text/essay. The overall text
focused on the misinformation and false news that people have been spreading and receiving
and how important it is for the government to control the spread of false information. The
conclusion recaps this by saying “We call on countries to take steps to counter the spread of
such disinformation”. They reiterated the importance of people receiving factual information
from reliable sources with regards to COVID-19, in order to stop citizens from spreading
false or mislead information.
