1. How did the scenario make you feel? This scenario was pretty calm because I just needed to make sure the patient-maintained oxygen saturations and that the patient had their medications. 2. What assessment findings would indicate that the patient’s condition is worsening? Decreased oxygen saturations with NRB mask at 100% would be a huge problem as well as tachycardia due to albuterol administration would be alerting. As well as the patient starting to become hypoxic. 3. When a patient develops a rapid onset of shortness of breath, what are the nurse’s immediate priorities? ABC’S: The airway is the nurse’s highest priority and being prepared to call a code to intubate a patient. As well as administering all medications needed for the patient to maintain her airway before extreme measures are implemented. 4. Review Jennifer Hoffman’s laboratory results. Identify which results are abnormal, and discuss how this relates to her clinical presentation and the disease process. Jennifer did not have any laboratory results in her chart that I could see. But her symptoms I could guess she would be in respiratory acidosis. 5. What communication techniques are important for an extremely anxious patient who is having difficulty breathing? Asking yes or no questions should be used because the patient is having difficulty speaking in full sentences. Or a communication board could be used so patient can point to pictures to relay how she feels. 6. What patient teaching priorities would be important for the patient who has experienced an acute exacerbation of asthma? Teaching the patient how to properly use they’re at home inhalers-emergency inhalers. As well as what to do with the asthma action plan. Also, important to teach which medications to be used first and what order they should be administered. 7. What resources would you recommend for the patient experiencing asthma? An asthma action plan always being on hand as well as regular primary care appointments. 8. What would you do differently if you were to repeat this scenario? How would your patient care change?
