Derived from your healthcare experience, distinguish components of translation science from an advanced nursing practice perspective. What is meant by translation science in advanced nursing practice? How have you seen translation science at work in your advanced nursing practice or in the practice of other doctor nurse practice (DNP)-prepared nurses? Translation science is increasingly being emphasized in healthcare. The process of evidenced-based healthcare which is to identify policy or clinical questions and analyze these questions by collecting knowledge and evidence to deliver effective, meaningful and high-quality healthcare to specific populations. After the evidence is collected, it is appraised, synthesized and transferred into practice settings where the clinicians can evaluate the impact of the interventions on health outcomes, health systems and professional practice (Pearson, Jordan & Munn, 2012). Translation science test the implementation of the interventions therefore, it is also known as implementation science. Testing the intervention helps to distinguish and clarify what implementation strategy work for a specific patient population to promote use of evidence-based practice in that setting (Titler, 2018). I have seen translational science at work in the emergency department (ED). The ED eliminated Creatine Kinase-Myocardial Band (CK-MB) blood testing in suspected acute coronary syndrome after the hospital’s research team (cardiology, intensivist, nurse leaders and educators, and other staff) presented evidence that supported exclusively using Troponin (Trop) blood testing to determine if the patient is having a heart attack or injury to heart muscle. We had been using both CK-MB and Trops for many years as part of a routine order set. Before the test was eliminated, all staff members in the ED had to attend mandatory meetings on the new routine. After the elimination of the test, the research team evaluated the outcomes related to the change and presented the findings in multiple meetings held in the ED. There were no adverse outcomes related to patient care quality and the change was very cost effective.
