You Decide Reflection of Health Policy The Chamberlain College of Nursing Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) curriculum meets the American Association of Colleges of Nurses competency standards by focusing on transiting the nurse practitioner into the highest level of leadership in practice. At this level of practice, the advanced nurse practitioner will attain eight fundamental outcome competencies which are designed and articulated by The Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice (AACN, 2006). The eight core competencies from the DNP Essentials outline the DNP curriculum at Chamberlain College of Nursing and provide the advanced practice nurse with in-depth knowledge on scientific underpinnings for practice, organizational and systems leadership, clinical scholarship and analytical methods for evidence-based practice, information systems, technology and patient care technology for healthcare transformation, health care policy for advocacy in health care, interprofessional collaboration and clinical prevention to improve patient and population health on micro, meso and macro levels, and advanced nursing practice (AACN, 2006). The health policy course expands the advanced practice nurse knowledge on healthcare delivery systems, organizations, and policy. After completing the course, the nurse practitioner is expected to have an expansion in the ability to effectively analyze, design, and advocate to influence positive healthcare change in society (AACN, 2006). This paper will provide a reflective summary on selected DNP competencies acquired through the Health Policy NR708 course and present a self-assessment of skills, knowledge, and integrated abilities to meet the eight sub-competencies of DNP Essential V as a result of active participation throughout this course (AACN, 2006). You Decide Reflection DNP Essential V DNP graduates are in a unique position to influence policy on various levels of health policymaking. DNP graduates, as leaders in the practice setting, provide a bridge between practice, research, and policy. The health policy course at Chamberlain provides students with the opportunities to discuss and analyze the special characteristics of developing and implementing health policy at the institutional, local, state, regional, federal, and international levels. The DNP graduate understands that health policy has influence on multiple healthcare delivery issues and is prepared to become a powerful influencer and advocator for policy change that will increase health care access, safety, quality, and efficacy (AACN, 2006). Essential V accentuates healthcare policy for advocacy in health care by outlining seven sub-competencies that the DNP graduate must comprehend to assume leadership roles in the development of health policy (AACN, 2006). Sub-competency One The first sub-competency of the AACN DNP Essentials V highlights that the DNP graduate should be prepared to “critically analyze health policy proposals, health policies, and related issues from the perspective of consumers, nursing, other health professions, and other stakeholders in policy and public forums (AACN, 2006, p. 14). This concept was demonstrated throughout the health policy course. The students were given opportunities to identify and discuss health policy frameworks and the problems in practice that could be framed into a policy issue. The weekly in-depth discussions also engaged students in discussion on the barriers in effective advocacy and how to overcome these barriers. The author was able to explain the problem of ineffective provider-to-provider communication for care transition to the emergency department. The author then discussed and elaborated on the barriers the nurse encountered when being an effective advocate, including fear of retaliation and lack of knowledge about established processes. Sub-competency Two The second sub-competency of the AACN DNP Essential V elaborates on the DNP graduate’s “abilities to demonstrate leadership in the development and implementation of health policies in health institutions, in all levels of government, and international levels” (AACN, 2006, p. 14). The discussion post for week two provided a forum for the students to provide in- depth discussions from the nursing perspective on the difference between macroeconomic and microeconomic healthcare conditions that impact a healthcare stakeholder. The students were also able to discuss the impact of socioeconomic and sociopolitical factors on healthcare finance and nursing practice. The author was able to share knowledge related to policy changes on an individual, community, and national level by elaborating on the affects of the Affordable Care Act and noting that policies that decrease the financial burden of healthcare cost on a systemic level will ultimately decrease the cost of healthcare on an individual level.
