I. The Cabinet



Made of number of department. Major Diff with executive office of presidency is head of
department had to be confirmed by senates.
Diff departments, from oldest to newest;
• State Department (secretary of State) 1st secretary was Thomas Jefferson. Job is foreign
policy/affair.
• Dept of the Treasury. Deals with financial policy. Supervises secret service.

• Dept of the Interior. National resources of country (Indian reserves...)

• Dept of Agriculture. Charge of food stamps

• Dept of Justice. Headed by the Attorney General.

• Dept of Commerce. Idea to stand up to the big business.

• Dept of Labor

• Dept of Defense. Deals with war. (NSA)

• H.U.D (housing and urban devpt)

• Dept of transportation

• Dept of Energy

• Dept of Education (more decentralised than in France)

• HHS (Health and Human Services)

• Veterans Affairs

• Dept of Homeland Security

All created under democratic presidency. Criticise by the Republican, said they waste money for
nothing.


II. The Executive Office of the President


President has personal advisers.
Government more and more complex in 20th century.
Executive branch grown so much that there’s imperial presidency: presidency is becoming too
isolated.
