Student Assignment and Feedback Form Name of Trainer/Assessor: Alexandra Power Learner (s) name: Candidate no: Level/Qualification: Certificate in TEFL level 5 QCF Module/unit no: 3 Assignment(s): Reflective learning journal and questions Learning outcomes: Be able to present grammatical structures and meaning in context Be able to select the target language appropriate to the linguistic level of the learners Be able to assess, grade and correct language for teaching purposes Instructions: Type your answers below the appropriate questions. Reflective Learning Journal Task 3.1 Read the following words of a teacher (T) in class trying to teach beginners. She/he is teaching ‘can’ ‘can’t’ for ability. What is the teacher’s (T) mistake? (actions in brackets) T: “I can read” (reads newspaper) T: (takes off spectacles) “Oh, I can’t see!” T: (pretends to swim) “I can swim” T: (grabs leg as if has cramp) “Oh, I can’t swim!” T: (points to ceiling and jumps up with arm stretched out) “I can’t touch the ceiling” T: “I can touch the desk” (touches desk) T: (points to no smoking sign) “I can’t smoke” Ans: The teacher here is teaching the modal verb “can” and “can’t” for ability. But suddenly in the last sentence the structure changes. “I can’t smoke” is a permissible structure. The teacher can’t have two structures in one lesson. Reading task 3.1 Read the following extract, then take six points, which you find useful/interesting, and summarize why this is so Ans: I found the following steps useful: 1. In order to make it easy for the learners both new vocabulary and new structures shouldn’t be taught at the same time. For example, if the grammar is being taught, the words used should be familiar to the students. 2. There are different ways of expressing grammar concepts in all the languages around the world. For example, Japanese has the same way of expressing first and second conditional. 3. Drilling shouldn’t be considered as old fashioned way of teaching, because it proves to be a very useful tool for teachers and it should be at their disposal at all times
